CARMUIRS TUNNEL COLLAPSE

After a very wet October 2002, a landslip occurred that caused a railway bridge to collapse at Carmuirs near Camelon on the western fringes of Falkirk. The fall happened within yards of the new Falkirk Wheel linking the 'Forth and Clyde' and 'Union' canals.

Also, a main north / south railway passes under the Forth and Clyde canal at that point through a very short, twin bore tunnel. The fall caused the closure of the track causing extensive delay and cancellation of passenger and freight rail services for some weeks. Trains from Glasgow to Falkirk Grahamston, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness had to be cancelled or diverted via Polmont. Complicated manoeuvres using loops in Edinburgh and double heading had to be employed for goods services.

The photographs taken here show the work being undertaken to repair the canal in late February 2003. While the track was made passable within days of the collapse the repairs to the canal were left until this time.

Estimates range from 5 to 12 weeks as to the duration of this remaing phase of the project.

Slightly inaccurate and not very well put together and certainly not to scale, but hopefully it shows all the bits and how they fit together.
